Michael Surratt and Gargoyle Brass to Perform April 29 Print E-mail

Gargoyle Brass and Michael SurrattApril 14, 2007 -- Hinsdale, Ill. -- Trumpets and brass will sound in Hinsdale on Sunday, April 29.  The Union Church of Hinsdale presents the Gargoyle Brass Quintet and Michael Surratt, organist, in a 4:00 PM concert at the church located at Third and Garfield Streets.

The Chicago Gargoyle Brass began in 1992 as a chamber group of faculty and students at the University of Chicago, whose campus architecture boasts a charming variety of the ensemble's namesake. Today the GargoyleBrass is in residence at Union Church of Hinsdale. Members of the ensemble are classically trained adult professionals, playing in orchestras, jazz bands, and musical theaters around Chicago. The group has performed cantatas and major liturgical works in major churches of Chicagoland, Wisconsin and Indiana. Concert recitalvenues have included the Newberry Library, Rockefeller Chapel of the University of Chicago, and the Graham-
Taylor Chapel of the Chicago Theological Seminary.

Michael Surratt, the concert's organist and also the director of the Allegro Handbell Ensemble, is a native of North Caolina and church organist since the age of twelve.  He was graduated from highschool at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, and received the Bachelor of Music degree inorgan performance at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and received the Master of Music degree in organat Northwestern University. He has been Organist and Director of Music at the Union Church of Hinsdale since1979. He has served as Dean of the Fox Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and has played organrecitals throughout the midwest and southeastern United States and in Europe. He has been heard on MinnesotaPublic Radio’s nationally syndicated program Pipedreams. He has been an Adjunct Instructor of Organ atElmhurst College, has been accompanist for several community choral groups and has appeared as organ soloist with several symphony orchestras in the Chicago suburbs.
