Volume V

The 1987 Allegro Handbell Choir

Released: 1987
Original Medium: Audio Cassette, Dolby B
Original Price: $10.00

Historical Note
Volume V was recorded live at the homecoming concert at Union Church just after returning from the 1987 Summer Concert Tour and at the 1986 Annual Christmas Concert.  It features a full hour of music, half of which are holiday selections and the remaining half are several concert selections from classical music and compositions especially for handbells.  Of special note, this recording contains the first recording of Elegy, originally titled Tombeau, which was commissioned by members of the 1971-1979 Allegro Handbell Choirs in memory of Dwight K. Menard, the director who really established Allegro as a professional-level performing ensemble.

From the Insert

The Allegro Handbell Choir is composed of fourteen high school age members with three to eight years' ringing experience.  An integral part of the music program of The Union Church of Hinsdale (United Church of Christ), the group also performs for a variety of civic, charitable, educational, and professional organizations, as well as guest appearances at other churches.  They have toured extensively in the United States, Europe and Canada.

Conducted by Michael Surratt, Director of Music and Organist at the Union Church since 1979, the bell ringers perform with five octaves (61) of Schulmerich bells, made in Sellersville, Pennsylvania.
