Historical
Note
Volume IX is the first all-holiday
recording produced by the Allegro Handbell
Ensemble. Although Volume I is
titled Christmas Album, side two of
the record is all non-holiday music. This
is also only the second time two
recordings have been made in consecutive
years. This recording was recorded
live during the Annual Christmas Concert
at Union Church at the end of the 1998
Winter Concert Series, and was the last recorded by the group under the name "Allegro Handbell Choir."
From the Insert
The Allegro Handbell Choir was formed in 1971 and since
then has been a strong part of the music program at The Union
Church of Hinsdale (United Church of Christ). There are
currently thirteen members ages 15 to 18 who have been ringing
three to eight years. In addition to participating in
the music program at Union Church, the group has performed for
a variety of civic, charitable, educational, and professional
organizations, on Chicago television programs, as well as
guest appearances at other churches. The Allegro
Handbell Choir, since 1975, has toured Europe five times and
has toured throughout the United States and parts of Canada.
The handbell choir performs with five octaves (61 bells) of
Schulmerich handbells made in Sellersville, Pennsylvania, and
with a matching five octaves of Malmark handchimes made in
Plumsteadville, Pennsylvania. Their concert programs
include sacred and secular music ranging from the 17th to the
20th century.
