Historical Note
Volume IV was recorded studio-style at Union Church before leaving for the 1984 Summer
Concert Tour. It was the first audio cassette produced by Allegro, and featured about an hour of music with a mix from the holiday and concert seasons. Unfortunately, the Dolby B cassettes were not duplicated well from the orginal Dolby
A recording reels, and the resulting cassettes suffered from severe audio distortions. It was not until 2003, when Allegro was producing its historic compilation, The First 40 Years (Volume XI), that the 1984 recording was remastered and the music could be heard as it was originally performed almost twenty years earlier. Several of these cuts appear on The First 40 Years, and the entire remastered recording may be released at a later date.
From the Insert
The Allegro Handbell Choir, formed about eighteen years
ago, is composed of fourteen high school age members with two to seven years'
ringing experience. An integral part of the music program of The Union Church of
Hinsdale (United Church of Christ), the group also performs for a variety of civic,
charitable, educational and professional organizations, as well as guest appearances at
other churches. The yave toured extensively in the United States, Europe and Canada.
Conducted by Michael Surratt, Director of Music and
Organist at the Union Church since 1979, the bell ringers perform with five octaves (61)
of Schulmerich bells, made in Sellersville, Pennsylvania.
